Where can I shoot trap near Ixonia or Jefferson County?
Leythos Demo Club sits in Watertown, WI, in Jefferson County. League nights are Thursday nights through the season. It is a short drive from Ixonia, Clyman, Johnson Creek, Milford, Reeseville, Lac La Belle, Old Ashippun and Ashippun, and from the rest of Jefferson County.
Is trap shooting good for beginners?
Yes, trap is widely reckoned one of the most beginner-friendly shooting sports. A league night is a low-pressure place to improve.
How does the Watertown trap league work?
Shooters compete in teams, and the top scores each week count toward the team total. Finished seasons move into the archive rather than being cleared. Substitutes cover a missing shooter, and makeups cover a missed week. Each shooter fires one or more rounds of 25 targets per league night.
What do I need to bring?
If you are only starting out, come along before you buy anything. A monthly meeting or a league night is the right first step, no equipment needed to turn up.
When does the league shoot?
The club shoots Thursday nights through the season. Dates for the current season are on the Events page, and any change is posted there first.
What is the difference between trap, skeet, and sporting clays?
All three use clay targets and shotguns, but each presents them differently. Trap targets fly away from the shooter at varying angles from a single house buried in front of the field. Skeet targets cross each other from two houses at opposite ends of a semicircular field. Sporting clays simulates hunting scenarios, with targets thrown from multiple positions across a course. Leythos Demo Club shoots trap, on four trap houses.

New to trap? The short version

The clay targets are called “birds”, and the machine that throws them sits in the trap house out in front of the line. “Pull” is the call that sends one. It leaves fast, going away from you, and you get one shell to break it.

Shooters work through five stations in a semicircle behind the house, 25 targets to a round. Because every target flies away rather than across, trap is the easiest of the clay games to read, which is why most people start here.

A league night at Leythos Demo Club is a mix of long-standing shooters and complete newcomers, on the same squad. A first season is for learning, and everybody's was.
